Over the years San Diego has slowly been making its mark in the culinary world, our niche restaurant scene is bustling. We now have world class breweries, renowned fresh juice companies, and a rapidly growing slow food and farm to table movement. We seem to have it all, except maybe one thing: real handmade ice cream. I noticed this after a recent trip to Portland, Oregon. The artisanal ice cream market seems to be exploding in the Pacific Northwest with a plethora of unique brands like Salt and Straw, What’s The Scoop, and Ruby Jewel.
Well, I have good news for all of you local San Diegans and serious ice cream connoisseurs. We may have one of the best undiscovered artisan ice cream makers in Southern California right here in our own backyard! Stout and Basil Scream (short for ice-cream), which was founded by Nikki Stout nearly three years ago, started out as a hobby and has quickly turned into a booming ice cream business. With flavors like Spicy Mexican Chocolate Espresso and Raw Vanilla Bean Goat Milk with Habanero Blackberry Sauce (fresh milk from a brood of local, lively goats), Miss Stout’s handcrafted ice cream is becoming the talk of the town amongst foodies and restauranteurs alike.
You can find her small batches of organic ice cream offered weekly at Haggo’s and Coral Tree Farms in Encinitas. Stout and Basil Scream sells out each week at the farm so if you would like to nab a pint I would suggest going early and fair warning this ice cream can become highly addicting so stock up! To all local Private Chefs; go check out Coral Tree Farms. You will be amazed by the wide variety of organic, heirloom produce and if you’re aiming to impress be sure to pick up a pint or two of Stout and Basil Scream which will undoubtedly give you major bonus points in the cucina this summer.
